Many of us naturally use negative language in life, even when we talk to ourselves. Often, it’s that you didn’t do anything at all, but that the person you were talking to wasn’t thinking about what they were saying at all people just blurt out the first thing that comes to their minds. What’s more, if you need additional evidence that what you say is important, just think about the last time someone said something means to you and how it made you feel.ĭid you walk around wondering why they said that or what brought on their mean-spirited response? Did you wonder what you did to cause them to say such mean things? We want to be seen.īut that need causes us to say things we don’t mean, talk without thinking, and respond faster than we should. Because of this, we are talking and writing more than ever. Life is rushing by us at the speed of light and we are all vying for position in this world. If you’ve ever sent an angry email or text to “tell someone off” and regretted it, then you know how important your words really are in life. ![]() 3) When we speak before we think, we say things we regret and then people get hurt That tends to happen when you’re not clear and concise with your speech. When we’re not careful with what we say, we can say one thing and the other person hears something else. And the only way you’re going to be able to do that is to think before you speak. It’s important to be able to clearly convey a message as well as listen. This can seriously affect our social life and our connections. Relationships can fall apart because of these misunderstandings, but they are so common in our written language that we don’t take them into consideration or pay attention to them the same way that our verbal language does. Yet, with so much of our conversations happening online and through text messages these days, it can be easy to be misunderstood. In fact, an 80-year Harvard study on happiness found that one of the most crucial factors to human happiness is our relationships. Human beings are social beings and having the ability to form solid connections is crucial to living a fulfilling life. Sometimes, all we have are the words we use when it comes to communication. Not only is what you say important but how you say it.įor instance, if you give someone a compliment, but do it in a sarcastic tone, it won’t be received well and may lead the receiver to believe you are being insincere, even if you really did mean it. ![]() 2) Human beings are social beings – it’s important to know how to communicate effectively It’s also based on how you present your ideas and how you verbalize your results. Unfortunately, not everything is based purely on results when comes to a lot of occupations. In short, you’ll limit your ability to get ahead. If you always say what’s your mind you’ll likely offend other people which can hurt your ability to make new connections. In a job interview if you say things that are careless and thoughtless you won’t present the version of yourself and you’ll be less likely to get the job. There are many times in life where the outcome will depend on what you say and how you say it.Īfter all, your words and how you say those words is the greatest tool people who in perceiving who you are. Your speech really can have a dramatic impact on your life and your success. This was voted ahead of ambition or capacity for hard work. Subscribers to the Harvard Business Review rated “the ability to communicate” as the most important factor in making an executive “promotable”. If you don’t think that what you say plays an important role in your life, think about the last time you missed an opportunity because you didn’t speak up, or when you didn’t get a job because of something you said that made the company think you weren’t the right person for the job. ![]() Why you need to think before you speakġ) Being careful with your words allows you to grab opportunities and get ahead in life Let’s look at why it’s important and why you need to pay more attention to what and how you speak. It’s important to stop and think about what you are going to say so that you can ensure your words are understood as you intend them. This is also true when what you say doesn’t align with what you do, and it can be difficult to come back from the things you said, whether you meant to or not. You might be inclined to believe that your actions speak louder than your words, but when it comes to how you represent yourself with your words and speech, how you come across to other people is really about what and how you say it. ![]() If you buy through links on this page, we may earn a small commission. I always am when performing this piece, but I look forward to bringing it back into the public eye and hope that perhaps, my rendition, will give the gift of a dropped jaw or two. I remember the first time I saw it performed-it was literally jaw dropping. While part of me wanted to focus entirely on the many performance lessons and theories I have explored over the past two years, I do appreciate the chance to get this piece back under my fingers. I have revisited this decision again and again. It must be performed multiple times, each with perfect timing and precision.Īnd the end of the trick-that may actually be even more difficult. The move is so difficult that one must practice it constantly in order to maintain proficiency and even then its use in the piece in question occurs under conditions challenging for the sleight-of-hand magician. The beginning of the piece is built on a little known, and even more seldom performed, sleight of hand technique to which I have dedicated several years of my life. So, in an effort to please all of my audience, I have pulled out one of the most difficult pieces in the entire literature of card magic, and definitely the most difficult piece in my personal repertory, for the show. While some of the magician members have no problem letting go and enjoying the show, there are always some tricksters, sitting with their arms crossed, that need to be impressed-and the best way to impress a magician is to show them something they know to be really hard to do. ![]() My goal as a magician is to serve the interests of my audience, which is normally real people but I do want the magicians to have a great time as well. The magicians want to see something they have never seen before, something that appeals to their specialized interests and values. Most of the real people and non-magician members are there to see amazing tricks and have a great time in this one of a kind clubhouse. Most magicians “know it all” and are watching the show with a critical insider’s eye. This creates a challenge for the performer. ![]() The audiences at The Magic Castle are comprised of member magicians, non-magician members who have a deep love for the art, and real people who are attending as guests of member magicians. ![]() The Magic Castle audience is both the easiest and most enthusiastic in the world for whom to perform magic, and also the most challenging. While the history and layout of the room are a big part of the appeal, the real secret is the audience that visits nightly. The Magic Castle, and specifically the Close-Up Gallery inside The Castle, may be the greatest venue any sleight-of-hand performer will get to play in their lifetime. I am very excited about my upcoming appearance at Hollywood’s Famous Magic Castle. ![]() You are not made a leader by your job title, you are made a leader by your influence.įinally, contemporary theories of leadership wrestle with the motivations of leaders: can you be a leader if your goal is selfish or even malicious? The classic question is, “Was Adolf Hitler a leader?” Theories of leadership must wrestle with the moral implications of a leader’s motivations. Peter Northouse defines leadership as “a process whereby an individual influences a group of individuals to achieve a common goal.” This definition makes clear that leadership is not a trait or behavior, and it is not a position. Defining Leadershipīefore we unpack contemporary theories of leadership, we need to define the term itself. As business, and our understanding of human nature, grows more complex, leadership theories and frameworks should evolve to accommodate the new contexts and understandings. The most prominent leadership theories today build on this understanding, and begin to integrate the perspective of followers and the contextual circumstances in which leaders and followers interact. This allowed for an understanding that leadership could be developed in others. In the middle of the last century, the study of leadership shifted from the study of traits to the study of behaviors: not who the leader is but what the leader does. We still see this theory at play unconsciously today, when someone is overlooked for a leadership role because of a quiet personality. (Starting, first, with a Y chromosome.) For many of us, our first understanding of leadership may have aligned with these theories: leaders were often men with dominant personalities. You were either lucky enough to be born with them, or you weren’t. (Perhaps you can see one primary fault with these theories, just from their name: they assumed only half the world’s population could even be considered for leadership.) The Great Man concept evolved into trait-based theories of leadership, which defined leadership by a leader’s characteristics, most of which were considered innate. The earliest theories of leadership were the Great Man Theories, which emerged in the late 1800s. We will explore:īut First, A Quick Review of Leadership Historyīefore we begin, we need to put leadership theory and practice in the context of history, to understand how the field of study has evolved. In this article, we outline five current leadership theories, and offer resources and suggestions for integrating the theories into your own leadership practice. In the past half century, the study of leadership has grown, offering many new theories and frameworks for exploring what it means to be a leader, and how to do leadership well. ![]() Leadership is a skill that can be learned, but it takes intentionality. In many companies, individuals are promoted because of their technical skill – they are gifted engineers, accountants, or marketers – but that does not mean they are prepared for leadership. But for many others, our first forays into leadership felt much like Yosko’s first day: knowing how to start was not obvious. They told her, “Just do whatever a president does.”įortunately, Yosko was a seasoned leader and she intuited where to start. Thinking it was a mistake, Yosko called her headquarters for advice. When Kathleen Yosko, now CEO of Northwestern Medicine’s Marianjoy Rehabilitation Center, began her first job as a hospital president, there was no onboarding process planned, and no one to welcome her. When you open up a new kit for the first time, it’s tempting to go hell for leather and try out your new (or first ever) vape - but it’s best to fully charge your batteries to set them up properly. ![]() It’s always a good idea to have two sets (or three if you’re an all day vaper like those of us at Vape Superstore head office!) and to keep some to one side for when you’re going out and need spares. Most advanced personal mods will require two 18650 batteries - these are the most popular supercharged batteries of the vaping world. With the invention of sub ohm vaping bringing some incredibly low resistance coils to the market, combined with high VG e liquids gaining popularity particularly amongst the cloud chasers of the world, batteries needed to step up their strength. They have a voltage limit thats set within the battery so are less customisable, but are great for beginners as they’re a user-friendly model with a fire to go button on the side. They’re the simple option with charging safety features - once they’re full they shut off and will last you a few hours to a full day depending on use. They’re a lower power than your sub ohm mods and batteries but are easy to charge - just plug in the USB port and you’re good to go. With its battery integrated into the device itself, there’s no need to remove anything to recharge it and they’re ideal for fixed wattage vaping and standard ohm coils (for those of you who prefer a stronger throat hit). Super affordable, with a decent amount of charge and a simple to use design they’re the typical starting point for most people. For the stories you hear about a “vape exploding,” at the heart of the issue is basic battery safety, especially for lithium-ion cells. When you’re starting out with vaping, one of the most popular options is the eGo style battery. While there is nothing inherently dangerous about using replaceable batteries in a vape device, serious risks to the user and device can happen without basic knowledge of ohms law and safe battery practices. That said, no major battery manufacturer publicly endorses the usage of their batteries in the context of vaping, and no batteries from other devices should be swapped for usage with your vape mods. Although vape batteries are often thought of as particular to vaping, they are the same types of batteries used in other electronic devices, like power tools, flashlights, lanterns, laptops, radios, electric bikes, and even electric cars. Not a battery you find in a convenience store, but a regular battery nonetheless. A vape battery is just a replaceable lithium-ion battery. I was chuckling and laughing and in awe at the references and jokes made in Primordia. You even get some deeper, awesome references to some other post-dystopian literary classics (try taking the plasma torch to Horatio's bookshelf). One robot judges another robot based on the numbers of Pi he can remember, while plenty of jokes are made about robot parts (including poor little Crispin's lack of arms). Similarly, the music sets the mood well, and the voice acting is high quality (and includes Bastion's popular narrator, Logan Cunningham). The graphics make Primordia's world believable, accentuating both its darker side in addition to its silly, clever humor. It's the same art style seen in Wadjet Eye's last game, Resonance, and it brings the post-apocalyptic world of Primordia to life. The visual style of the game is pixel sprites and it looks great in motion. Good thing, then, that there is a deep backstory hidden behind the simple backdrop that Horatio and Crispin first see, and once the game tears into that meaty part of the story you'll be hooked. I wanted to learn more about it as the game progressed. Primordia's world is well detailed and explained throughout the game. But if you're at least open to the idea of a point and click adventure, Primordia's certainly a fine choice. This won't be the game to change your mind if you don't like this genre. That means you can expect all of the strengths (strong storytelling, worldbuilding) and its weaknesses (limited solutions leading to frustration at times, short game length). Primordia falls squarely into the point and click adventure genre. ![]() Horatio and Crispin must survive this dangerous situation, but their plight turns out to be only a small occurrence in the overarching story.
